Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) is a computer application that finds and removes malware.[1] It is made by Malwarebytes Corporation.[2][3]
Software information
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is available in both a free and a paid edition.[1][3] One difference between the two versions is that the free edition must be run manually, while the paid version can automatically perform scheduled scans. The paid version also adds real-time protection and IP blocking to prevent access to malicious web sites. Both versions scan a user's computer and remove malware if any is found.[4]
Reception
- SoftPedia's, Ionut Ilascu, Editor of Software Reviews, stated Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware detects mostly threats that others security products miss, so it cannot yet be used as the only protection for the system. In fact, it was unable to detect any of 67 rootkits. On the other hand, he stated that it works great as supplementary security program for other security applications."[5]
- PC World's Preston Gralla wrote that "Using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is simplicity itself".[1]
- CNET cited Malwarebytes as being useful against the Antivirus XP 2008 spyware.[6]
- CNET has also awarded it April 2009 Editor's Choice along with 25 other computer applications, 4 of which where also computer security applications, such as ESET Smart Security, Avira AntiVir Personal, CCleaner, and TrueCrypt.[4][7]
- News organizations have also picked up on Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, having mostly positive things to say about program's detection abilities.[8][9]
- Third party sites specializing in computer help, such as Bleeping Computer, have listed Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware as a method of removing rogue security applications such as Antivirus 2009,[10] as well as Spyware Protect 2009.[11]
- Mark Gibbs from Network World gave MalwareBytes 4 out of 5, saying that the software does its job well, but that it does not provide good explanations of its results. He also reported that the program took more than four hours to scan his computer.[8]
