Control Elements are associated with most eukaryotic genes

- segments are non-coding DNA segments that regulate transcription by binding certain proteins 

- segments are critical to the precise regulation of gene expression in different cell types

Proximal Control Elements - located close to the promoter

Distal Control Elements (= Enhancers) - may be thousands of nucleotides away from promoter
