The Free Art and Technology Lab a.k.a. F.A.T. Lab is an artist group dedicated to pair Pop Culture with Open Source. [1] It is known for its' provocative works criticizing classic Copyright and Patents models in the field of media and creative technolgies. F.A.T. Lab supports and creates works for the public domains and new open licenses.

History

The F.A.T. Lab was founded in 2007 by Evan Roth and James Powderly (which are also know for the [[Graffiti Research Lab]]. It is based in Brooklyn, New York. A large part of it's members were research fellows, artist in resident or otherwise affiliated with the New York based Eyebeam Atelier in 2005-2008. Most F.A.T. Lab members are based in North America as well as Central Europe and Asia. Connected through the Internet it's members cooperate on mostly digital and web based art projects which are published on the F.A.T. website. Often it's members also publish their own artistic work under the label of F.A.T.
