Wikipedia:WikiProject Numismatics/Categories
Proposed update to the existing category structure for articles in Wikipedia:WikiProject Numismatics. For questions/discussion, please use the talk page, or simply update this structure. Once consensus is reached, and categories changed, this page will be updated to show the (new) existing structure with descriptions of each category for future reference. Descriptions below currently focus on the difference between the current structure and the proposed structure.
Category Structure
All of the following categories belong in the Numismatics WikiProject. They are all subcategories of Category:Money. All categories not listed here, including other subcategories of Money, do not belong in the WikiProject.
- Category:Currency.
- Category:Numismatics. Moved from a subcategory of Category:Money, since Numismatics is the study of currency, not money. Also, many articles need to be removed from this category. It should be reserved specifically for articles relating to the study of currency, not articles relating to currency. So, this would be for famous numismatists, collectors' clubs, collectors' magazines/resources, etc. From the Numismatics infobox, Terminology, Coinage, Coin collecting.
- Category:Currency production. Articles about producing coins and paper money. If someone wanted to add information about which metals are used to make coins and why, it would go here.
- Category:Mints. Articles about mints.
- Category:United States mints. Articles about the United States Mint and its branch mints.
- Category:United States Mint officers. All officers of the United States Mint
- Category:United States Mint engravers. Engravers of the United States Mint. These are the people who design the currency which is why this category appears twice in the hierarchy.
- Category:United States Mint officers. All officers of the United States Mint
- Category:United States mints. Articles about the United States Mint and its branch mints.
- Category:Currency designers.
- Category:Currency production methods. Articles relating to how currency is produced.
- Category:Mints. Articles about mints.
- Category:Coins (label). A labelling category, not exactly part of the hierarchy. Within the hierarchy, a simple article will fit in one spot. If it's about coins, it will also be part of this category. Many articles in many other subcategories will be about coins.
- Category:Banknotes (label). A labelling category, not exactly part of the hierarchy. Within the hierarchy, a simple article will fit in one spot. If it's about banknotes, it will also be part of this category. Many articles in many other subcategories will be about banknotes.
- Category:Community currencies. No recommendations for improvement.
- Category:Exonumia. All forms of non-money that are used as money or similar to money are included here. The project organization splits tokens and medals out, but these are part of Exonumia. From the infobox, Medals, Orders, Decorations, Tokens, Checks, Credit Cards would go here.
- Category:Fictional currencies. No recommendations for improvement.
- Category:Legal tender. This is a new category. Category:National currencies and Category:Regional currencies were at this level. Merging the existing category structure with that proposed in the infobox led to the need for a category here.
- Category:Modern currencies. A new category reflecting the time based categorization used in the project infobox.
- Category:Circulating currencies (label). A new category reserved for circulating currencies. Takes articles from Category:National currencies
- Category:Modern obsolete currencies (label). A new category taken from Category:Historical currencies to distinguish between medieval, ancient, and modern obsolete currencies. Also takes articles from Category:National currencies
- Category:Monetary unions (label). Moved from Category:Regional currencies (which was in a different location). Articles will also be categorized by time period (modern/medieval/ancient) and location (african/asian-pacific/american/european).
- Category:Commemorative currencies (label). New category to label commemoratives.
- Category:African currencies
- Category:American currencies. Moved from Category:Currencies of the Americas
- Category:Brazilian currency. Moved from Category:Currencies of Brazil
- Category:Canadian currency. Moved from Category:Currency of Canada
- Category:United States currency. Moved from Category:Currency of the United States
- Category:United States banknotes. Moved from Category:Federal Reserve Notes
- Category:Historical currencies of the United States. Deleted. This is redundant because of the labelling categories.

- Category:Danish currency. Moved from Category:Danish krone
- Category:Eurozone currency. Moved from Category:Euro

It affects how money is created and destroyed, and what constitutes a reliable measure of economic growth and measures of national income.
