Gconf-editor allows a user to manually edit settings used in the Gconf database. It is mostly used by developers to debug applications or by power users to edit hidden settings.

Gconf-editor has been a controversial application, for many reasons. Its interface is similar to Regedit, Microsoft Windows' registry editor, while some users of GNOME has criticized it for justifying the removal of popular features from the user interface of programs. Many people have called for its removal from the GNOME. software distribution because of these controversies.
