APRS

APRS is a system developed by Bob Bruninga, WB4APR. APRS is a real-time system that uses amateur radio to transmit position reports, weather reports, and text messages between users. Stations Equipped with a GPS Receiver and a computer encode encode the GPS Position fix into a data Packet that is transmitted by Radio at 1200 bps using the AX-25 standard. In the USA this is usually takes place on 144.39Mhz . Through the use of Internet gateway stations data is transfers across the Internet to database servers and other stations where the data may be rebroadcast for special events.
