I did an overhaul on much of this page. However, I'd like to add a link to the location of these quotes you used. If they can't be verified, then maybe someone can take a look at an auto-biography for a similar attribution. More specifically, quotes from Ray don't qualify as primary sources. I have a few brief concerns so far.

- Is there anyway to get a bigger image for the infobox? The infobox makes the single cover look pixelated.

- I'm guessing critical reception will be hard to find? Plus, it'd probably be near impossible to find negative reviews.

- "Jerry Lee Lewis found particular success with his rendition in 1961.[20]" How much success? Did it chart?

Critical reception: I have career charts for Ray Charles. Your question here is a good one, and I'm a bit stuck. I don't know which scholarly magazines or journals would discuss R&B music in 1959. Surely since there was such a vibrant jazz/R&B listening base there should have been industry magazines or some such, but I don't know what they are. I don't want to use teen mags: the equivalent of Tiger Beat or something... Rolling Stone wasn't around. Let me check the books I used to see if stuff is cited. If I have access to it in my library, I may be able to get critical comments. I'll check back with you later today.

Update: I went to the music library to learn more about critical commentary from 1959. There are three sources. Only one is carried by my library, on microfilm. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it too much. It's going to be incredibly hard to find enough critical commentary to probably even fit a paragraph, let alone a NEGATIVE review of the song. Actually, I'm sure you could find a lot of negative reviews of the song, due to the controversy surrounding it the time it was released, but to gain access to such sources is probably easier said than done. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it right now, but I'd still keep an eye on anything if reviews become available, especially some negative ones WITH the positive ones. And I am extremely jealous that you have a library with a section dedicated to music! ;) Also, great work on finding the chart source for Jerry Lee Lewis' version of the song! And great work on the picture. In conclusion, I honestly wouldn't worry much about the critical reception, but I would definitely keep an eye open in case anything is found. First, the Music Library is a separate branch, and I said that just to make you more jealous. Secondly, although I'm not sure this is required for GA, the criticism would be for FA, which I would like to bring this to, so your request puts me a bit further toward that end. You're SO lucky! :( All we have on our campus is some archives to some newspapers. But I think we're digressing. ;) Anyway, OK. Then that will certainly be a challenging and fun project, but I'm sure you'll do just fine! As of right now, I am going to give the article another look-through, and then I am more than likely going to pass it in its current state. If you want to nominate it for FA, though, there is definitely a lot more work to be done. :) Especially expansion in certain areas. I'll be a bit more detailed when I have reached my final decision. <reset> July 13 1959 issue of Billboard had a promising title called "Charles hits again with 'What'd I Say'", but it's a bio so brief it's shorter than the lead of Charles' Wiki article. I found another from Variety in 1960, but it is another bio and an announcement that he played at a Hollywood club on July 29, 1960. GA pass

After taking another look at the article, I have no doubt in my mind now that this is an easy pass. By the way, the new addition to the "Legacy" addition is a GREAT addition. :) If you want to take this up to FA, I first suggest that you definitely expand the reception section to include critical response, and since I know you're working on that I'm not too worried about you finding things for that. :) Another thing I'd also do is expand on the cover versions. For example, if any other cover versions also charted on any charts, I'd definitely make sure to note that, as well as if they had any reasons for covering the songs. Another thing I suggest is a peer review, but since you've written so many high quality featured articles, I'm sure this advice is silly to remind you about. :) Great job, this article has passed its GA review, and good luck going for a Featured Article status! I'm questioning the validity of this source. According to its Q & A page, this is a site run by a guy who compiles his own lists, though he claims they are based on other sources. If the other sources which are widely recognized (Billboard, Rolling Stone, Vh1, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame) are in this article, why is his list also included? --Moni3 (talk) 17:35, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Apostrophe Dee

I came here curious to find out whether "What'd" meant "did" or "would" in this context:

Is it: a) What would I say? or b) What did I say? or c) Something else?

I've heard both meanings in conversation, but the Lyrics here don't make it clear to me.

I have a hunch that the only way to know for sure would be to ask him, but I thought I'd ask. Even speculation would interest me. But if this is knowable, it'd be important information to add to the article. Chrisrus (talk) 03:41, 29 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Charles said he initially preferred the "What I Say" title, but when I see "What'd" it generally means "what did". Please keep in mind rock and roll is not known, particularly in this era, for having profound lyrics per bee bop-a-lula and a whomp bomp-a-loo bomp a whomp bam boom. Also, I get the idea that "What I say" sounds like something shouted in a raucous church service akin to "Can I get an amen?" --Moni3 (talk) 12:50, 29 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
