Server issues and PDF link displays blank page
After successfully generating a PDF of Wikipedia:Books/Dog I created this test book: User:84user/Books/Test4 in order to test whether plaint text gets rendered. The first PDF render reported some timeout error (but I have been getting those from wikipedia a few times a day lately), but my subsequent attempts at clicking the PDF link for my test book resulted in a blank page with the URL http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Book/render_collection/&colltitle=User:84user/Books/Test4 and zero content in the html source (using Firefox). I report this in case others are seeing this same problem. If not, then is there something wrong with my test? 84user (talk) 12:42, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
- Update. I just tried to create a PDF from User:84user/Books/Test4 and received one of the Wikimedia Foundation "Our servers are currently experiencing a technical problem" error messages, but then I was able to re-render the Dog book (no errors so far). I then retried my Test4 book and get a blank.
- User:84user/Books/Test5 is Test4 minus TOC and Intro and results in "technical problem."
- User:84user/Books/Test6 is Test5 minus external link to Help:Books and results in "technical problem."
- User:84user/Books/Test7 is Test6 minus main article and results in no response
- User:84user/Books/Test8 is Test7 minus all text Notes and this worked
- User:84user/Books/Test7 (retry) still results in no response
- User:84user/Books/Test5 (retry) still results in no response (but no error message this time)
- User:84user/Books/Test5again (copy and paste of Test5) results in no response
- So, maybe there is something invalid with my tests that causes this reproducible lack of response?

- More results.
- User:84user/Books/Test4 (I edited it, see diff) now renders Ok!
- User:84user/Books/Test4 (I reverted my edit, see [1]) results in no response
- User:84user/Books/Test10 (Test4 minus the main article) results in no response
- User:84user/Books/Test11 (Test10 minus the second text note) results in no response
- User:84user/Books/Test12 (Test11 with shorter note) results in no response
- ...
- User:84user/Books/Test14 (Test13 with even shorter note) results in "You have requested a special page that is not recognized by Wikipedia. A list of all recognized special pages may be found at Special:Specialpages."
- I'll give up testing for now. 84user (talk) 13:22, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
- You get this when clicking on the PDF link in the {{saved book}} template ? You should try using the "PDF version" link in your toolbox, I think that solves the rendering issues. It seems that the link to a PDF version without a specific oldid might be problematic at times. For testing purposes: PDF link from template for Test4 PDF link for a specific revision from toolbox --TheDJ (talk • contribs) 09:28, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for those testing links, the first fails, the second works. Yes indeed, the PDF link in the template consistently returns a zero-size html response with my most of User page test books (Test8 works by contrast). The "PDF version" link works, at least for all books I tried. However, PDF link (in the template) works for a sample of other user's user page books, so it still seems there is a particular combination of wikitext and other unknown factor that will reproducibly create this problem. 84user (talk) 17:25, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
Bug: Boldface ever after
Help:Books/Feedback/Status In a discussion on sv:WP:KAW, a user signature — <b><i>[[user talk:Xenus|<span style="color:#182C45">x</span><span style="color:#264E7F">e</span><span style="color:#5376A2">n</span><span style="color:#7D9ABF">u</span><span style="color:#A1B8D6">s</span>]]</i></b> 28 april 2009 — caused the rest of the book to appear in boldface. --LA2 (talk) 17:22, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
- I added a ticket for that. -- Volker.haas (talk) 13:31, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
