T.R. Smedberg Middle School (usually called Smedberg Middle School or also called just Smedberg) is a middle school located in Sacramento, California although the school is located in the Elk Grove Unified School District. Its feeder school and next door neighbor is Sheldon High School.

History

Theodore Roosevelt (known to all as Ted or T.R.) Smedberg came to Elk Grove High School in as the principal in 1935. He served there for 13 years until 1948, when he took a position with the Sacramento County Schools Office. He was appointed Superintendent of Schools for Sacramento County in 1950 and stayed in that position until his retirement in 1969. Mr. Smedberg was a lifetime supporter of science activities for young people, and one of his proudest accomplishments was the establishment of the Sly Park outdoor education facility. A prominent Elk Grove resident, Mr. Smedberg was active in community affairs in Elk Grove and also has a park named for him.

Staff Members

Principal

The current principal is Sharon Barnes. The 2008-2009 school year will be her first year as the principal at Smedberg. She was the vice principal at Valley High School prior to working at Smedberg. The previous principal was Keven MacDonald, who is now principal at Valley High School.

Vice Principal

The current vice principal is Tina Lee.

Teacher in Charge

The current teacher-in-charge is Portia Clinton.

Campus

The campus consists of 47 classrooms, 2 computer classrooms, a library, 2 gymnasiums, a track, a soccer field, a quad, blacktop area for physical education classes and basketball, and a large multipurpose room.

Athletics

The school has four school athletic teams. Volleyball (girls), Basketball (girls/boys), Wrestling (girls/boys) and Track & Field (boys/girls). The high school next door offers sports such as Football, Soccer, Softball with the team name of Sheldon Jr. Huskies.

Mascot

The school mascot is the Wolverine. Students in Leadership at the school dress up in wolverine costumes, which are named Smeddy and Bergy.

SMS has their website hosted on the school districts website, at www.egusd.net/smedberg. When there, students and parents are able to check up on upcoming school events, student grades, download forms, and get information about school rules and expectations.
