The Open Notebook Science Challenge is an Open Notebook Science Crowdsourcing research project[1] that allows anyone to contribute to the effort of measuring the solubility of organic compounds in organic solvents and report their findings using open notebook science.
The challenge began on September 28, 2008[2] and now involves researchers and their students in at least 4 different countries[3] and has resulted in the measurement of over 400 solubility measurements[4].
Prizes
To encourage participation, each month an award[5] is given to the student who does, in the opinion of the judges[6], the best work. In order to participate, students have to be a US or UK resident[7]. The award is a US$500 cash prize and a year's subscription to the journal Nature. The awards are sponsored by Submeta[8] and Nature.
Chemical Donations
Sigma Aldrich is also an official sponsor of the Open Notebook Science challenge. Sigma Aldrich is participating by donating and shipping requested chemicals to any experimenters in the US or UK[9] for free.
