Has anyone worked with de:Benutzer:Flacus/Wikipedia Interwiki-Link-Checker/en? I would imagine that much of the logic you are looking for is embedded in this. --Open2universe 22:44, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've used it. All it does is search for articles with the same title on different wikipedias, and then prompt users to affirm they are the same article, or say they aren't. It's useful for establishing ties for articles that are usually listed under the same name in different languages, like people and places. It's useful, and I encourage others to use it, but its utility is limited for fields which often don't have the same name, such as science and history. The same limitation exists for another tool, the Global Wikipedia Article Search.Rigadoun (talk) 17:33, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How we do it on the Hebrew Wikipedia

Hi,

Several editors in the Hebrew Wikipedia have been pretty good at adding interwiki links to articles there. I somehow ended up coordinating that effort there and now i feel that other Wikipedias may benefit from this. I couldn't find anything really similar in Wikipedias in any other language that i can read.

This WikiProject seems fitting in its name, but i don't see any detailed processes or tools for this. (But maybe i don't understand something.)

I wrote a detailed explanation in English about what we do in he.wiki and you can find it here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Interlanguage Links/Ideas from the Hebrew Wikipedia. I also advertised it on the Wikipedia-l mailing list. I got several responses from interested Wikipedians from English, Spanish, Swedish and Russian Wikipedias and i believe that this may help a lot of projects in other languages. (My intuition says that Wikipedias in the 5000-200000 articles range will have the most benefit from it.)

Some discussion started on the talk page there, but Hebrew Wikipedia is too exotic a place for an international discussion, especially with our right-to-left forms, which make it very hard to write in English. So - i would like to propose it as a process for the English Wikipedia, too. I shall be especially pleased to see that explanation page translated to other languages.

Within a few days i'll complete the roll-out of this way of working in the Russian Wikipedia. If there are no comments here, i'll be bold and start rewriting the main page of this project in accordance with Wikipedia:WikiProject Interlanguage Links/Ideas from the Hebrew Wikipedia.

From Greek Wikipedia: Use a list of articles without interwikis and ... start finding interwikis. Then put interwiki in the local and the english wikipedia. Many interwiki links in disambiguation pages are bogus. Here is the problem:

  • Let's say that word W1 has meanings m1, m2 and m3 in language L1.
    • Then we create a disambiguation page [[L1:W1]], with links to articles [[L1:W1 (m1)]], [[L1:W1 (m2)]], and [[L1:W1 (m3)]].
  • Let's say that word W2 has meanings m1, m4 and m5 in language L2.
    • Then we create a disambiguation page [[L2:W2]], with links to articles [[L2:W2 (m1)]], [[L2:W2 (m4)]], and [[L2:W2 (m5)]]..
  • Let's say that word W3 has meanings m2 and m6 in language L3.
    • Then we create a disambiguation page [[L3:W3]], with links to articles [[L3:W3 (m2)]], and [[L3:W3 (m6)]].

Clearly, [[L2:W2]] has nothing in common with [[L3:W3]] (not the same word, not the same meanings). So, there should be no interwiki links between [[L2:W2]] and [[L3:W3]]. The problem is that it happens. Why?
It happens because somebody linked [[L1:W1]] to [[L2:W2]] because of the shared m1 meaning, then somebody else linked [[L3:W3]] to [[L1:W1]] because of the shared m2 meaning. Then robots linked everything together.

The root of the problem is that interwiki between disambiguation pages should not be based on meanings (actually one meaning among several in one language), but on the word itself. A disambiguation page is about a word.

The disambiguation page [[L1:W1]] should only have interwiki links to [[Ln:W1]] disambiguation pages in other languages (they are disambiguation pages for the W1 word). The disambiguation page [[L2:W2]] should only have interwiki links to [[Ln:W2]] disambiguation pages in other languages (they are disambiguation pages for the W2 word)... Interwiki conflicts

I watch a English-language scandal article that editors have cheerfully linked to a worse scandal article in two other languages. The scandal has a different title, a different scope. So instead of "actress X flirtation with Y" we have "actresses X and Z and a menage a trois with W." Not quite the same thing at all! (BTW I don't like scandal articles and would like to delete it along with other editors. We have failed).

But are we required to accept an almost deliberate mistranslation in another language? It seems to me that they can a) translate that article into English and link it. From our POV, they can translate OUR English language article into another language and merge similarities or whatever. But where does it specify that there has to be some correlation between two articles that are supposed to be "clones"? Student7 (talk) 20:58, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Help:Interlanguage links says very clearly: "Interlanguage links are links from any page (most notably articles) in one Wikipedia language to the same subject in another Wikipedia language."

Projet:Interwikification#Sous-pages de travail

Hello, I am coming from French wikipedia. I created a board with interlanguage lists French <-> English. Some French articles don't have any interlanguage link, whereas some English articles have the same title. By 70%, they match. If you want helping to contribute to link Englich articles to French is on this page Projet:Interwikification#Sous-pages de travail. Maybe we can do the reverse operation.
