Opera Mini is a J2ME web browser for mobile devices. It runs on most phones that supports Java Applets.

Unlike normal web browsers it fetches all content through a proxy that runs the layout engine of the Opera desktop browser. The engine on the proxy server converts all web pages into a smaller format called OBML (Opera Binary Markup Language). When the content reaches the phone it has been reduces in size by typically 90%. The conversion on the server also involves reformatting the pages using SSR (Small Screen Rendering) so that they only need vertical scrolling to be readable.

Opera Mini was launched in Norway by TV2 and Opera Software the 10th of August 2005. On October 20th the same year a beta version was made availiable to Nordic countries.
