Knowledge-based engineering
Knowledge-Based Engineering (KBE), as a discipline, has its roots in computer-aided design (CAD). KBE has several definitions and roles. For instance, it can be thought of strictly in terms of a particular set of operations related to a CAD system. One of its roles is to bridge knowledge management and Design Automation. An example, for now, is electronic design automation (a mechanical example will be forthcoming).
But, KBE can also be seen as the discipline that covers the full range of activities related to product life cycle management. This includes design, analysis (computer-aided engineering – CAE), manufacturing, and support. In this inclusive role, KBE has to cover a multi-disciplinary role related to many computer aided technologies (CAx).
A recent article (See "External Links 1") provided an overview of KBE and how it differs from automation (CATIA context). In this case, KBE is supported by workbenches within the CAD/CAE environment with visual basic being applied for local extensions of the workbench functionality. “Automation” in this case deals with doing local extensions using C++ (c_plus_plus).

PLM covers steps that exist within any industry that produces goods. KBE at this level will deal with product issues of a more generic nature than with CAx.
