Background

Data Robotics was founded in May 2005 by Geoff Barrall and Julian Terry with the vision of developing storage systems that were simple enough for everyday use by non-technical users. The company developed a data layout technology called BeyondRAID which at the time of it's development was the first real alternative to RAID, the established storage technology used in all other multi drive storage systems sold in the market . This break with a traditional 20 year established technology used by all other storage vendors (including EMC Corporation, Netapp, Hitachi) makes Data Robotics notable[1] [2].

The company's initial product, the Drobo, was launched in June 2006. The product saw initial acceptance in the creative professional marketplace where inherently non-technical users needed enormous amounts of protected storage, especially photography where key professionals like Scott Kelby were quick to adopt the technology. More recently the company has seen adoption of the technology selling into small businesses and larger corporate customers and the US government.
