Periorbital hyperpigmentation is characterized by dark circles around the eyes, which are not uncommon, often familial, and frequently found in individuals with dark pigmentation or Mediterranean ancestry.[1]: 858  Atopic patients may also exhibit periorbital pigmentation (allergic shiners), and treatment is ineffective.[1]: 858
