Fred Optical Engineering Software
Photon Engineering LLC, located in Tucson Arizona, sells the FRED optical engineering software program capable of simulating the propagation of light through virtually any optical/mechanical system. FRED can propagate both incoherent and coherent light using Gaussian beam propagation through virtually any optical system. The code has been in development for over 10 years and was developed to create a 3D CAD virtual prototyping environment where users can simulate any optical/illumination system before manufacturing. The program offers a high level of visualization to system to check optical systems for useability, illumination, ghosting and stray light issues. It offers a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get)parametric interface that allows users to position any object versus any other along with a CAD system tree, 3D system viewer and output window to print analysis information.
FRED features a multi-threaded non-sequential raytracing capability with an optimization tool to specify variables, merit function and multiple targets to optimize on. The program can import both CAD geometry using IGES and STEP formats or use the native geometry builder. Any light source can be simulated and FRED is compatible with other hardware measured light source products like Radiant Imaging's Prosource.
FRED works with other software products using a Automation Client/Server interface with product such as Matlab, Mathamatica, to create a multidisciplinary environment. This capability along with the built-in Visual Basic language make FRED an ideal optical programming language where the user has complete access to create new interfaces and adding new algorithms to the product.
FRED has been used on a multitude of projects including the NOAO's Large Synoptic Survey Telescope.
