DSTC is a leading research organization in the field of information technology. It conducts applied research focusing on a number of application domains, such as government, defence and health care. It is a centre of excellence in distributed systems technologies and has an international reputation as one of the most effective and influential IT research organisations in Australia.

DSTC is supported by the Australian Government's Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) program and participants made up of universities, government, and industry players.

The official entity is the company DSTC Pty Ltd was created in 1992 to manage the Distributed Systems Technology Centre CRC. That first CRC successfully completed its research program in June 2000. A second CRC was established, in July 2000: the CRC for Enterprise Distributed System Technology which was also managed by DSTC Pty Ltd. The CRC EDST will complete its operations in June 2006.

DSTC was one of the most successful CRCs in Australia, and leading centre for expertise in distributed systems and information technology.
