Ireland as island article
Hi. I saw your vote at Ireland, and not having seen you around, had a look at you pages. It's interesting to me that you are clearly very into Northern Ireland articles, yet find Ireland the best name to describe the island. I've always found that the confusions with the Ireland article (having state/island content and being linked as both state and island) has hindered Northern Ireland articles - sometimes to the point of making Ireland seem like a single unified state. Have you experienced that? I collected some problems in here (just the tip of the iceberg too). I would prefer to have both states offered by a disam page, and have a geographical-only 'Ireland (island)' article.--Matt Lewis (talk) 16:53, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Matt, been about a while, only recently got up the nerves to enter into an Ireland-related discussion! Personally I feel the solution to the links problem is to fix the links themselves - province to province, state to state, island to island.
- I don't believe there is anything gained from a disambiguation page that isn't already catered for on the very first line (This article is about the island. For the cou...) and in the introduction of the Ireland article.. Hope this clarifies my thoughts on the Ireland page. As you have very clearly pointed out the "..of Ireland"s, "...of Northern Ireland"s and "...of the Republic of Ireland"s all really need cleaned-up. Roadnote ♫ 01:47, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for clarifying that. How would you feel if the hatnote you mentioned was made even clearer (I find it a bit hidden myself). Also - would it be OK to remove the 'forked' cultural and political information from the island article (so it's geographical only, like it's meant to be)? See Great Britain for an example of what it would be like. I agree that if we needed to do link-clearing work, all the articles need working on anyway. --Matt Lewis (talk) 02:34, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
- I wouldn't have a problem with making the top bit clearer as to the contents of the article. Taking out the cultural and polical stuff is difficult. Ireland isn't like Great Britain where there are two/three distinct geo-political units. There are all-Ireland political and cultural institutions which operate irrespective of the border: Presbyterian Church, GAA, Irish Rugby, Foras na Gaeilge, Tha Boord o Ulstèr-Scotch etc. The GB institutions are generally UK-wide and so are discussed in United Kingdom, leaving Great Britain as an entirely geographical article. The colour of Northern Ireland in the map you changed today
Hello, I'm afraid I have reverted the map back to use yellow for Northern Ireland and reverted the changes to the captions you made: the colours were chosen after a discussion on Talk:Subdivisions of the United Kingdom, where it was felt that using green for Northern Ireland was making too political a point. If you feel the colour should be changed, by all means raise it on an appropriate forum (say the Subdivisions article), and see if you have widespread agreement for the change. - Sorry about that DDStretch, thanks for letting me know. Roadnote ♫ 19:09, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
- Have a look at Talk:Subdivisions of the United Kingdom again please; I'm requesting design discussion to include green for Ireland just so we can have matching colours on Ireland/Northern-Ireland maps. -- Evertype·✆ 21:51, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
