Bank code
Appearance
A Bank Code is a code (mostly a number) assigned by a Central Bank, a Bank Supervisory Body or a Bankers Association in a country assigned to all its licensed member banks. The rules vary to great extent between the countries. Also the name of such a code varies. In some countries the bank codes can be viewed over the internet, but mostly in the local language.
Examples
- Austria: Bankleitzahl, 5 digits, one per bank.
- Germany: Bankleitzahl, 8 digits, one per bank, some banks do have different codes assigned to their branches, others use only one code. Search at Deutsche Bundesbank only in [German]
- The Netherlands: no Bank Codes issued,. account numbers are unique in the country.
