OPS is simply defined by the sum of /OBP and /SLG.


This statistic is very popular in measuring the offensive worth of a player since it

  • Is relatively easy to calculate
  • On a team-by-team basis, correlates well (and positively!) with the number of wins a team achieves.

Originally solely the province of statisticians, the stat is lately finding acceptance in mainstream baseball coverage and analysis.
