A resident of British Columbia, Essam Marzouk arrived in Canada in 1993 as a refugee fleeing persecution in Pakistan.[1]

Between 1993-1998, he co-founded an import-export business named 4-U Enterprises with Amr Hamed[1]

In 1998, the year that Hamed was killed in an Afghan training camp, Marzouk left his Canadian wife and child behind, and returned home. He was arrested by Egypt, and sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment for being an alleged member of al-Jihad.[1]
