XCOM Data Transport

XCOM, is a proprietary file transfer utility owned by Computer Associates. It has been popular on Mainframes and midrange computers for many decades and functions on both SNA and TCP/IP networks. XCOM establishes a peer to peer connection as opposed to FTP which is client/server relationship. The remote system can initiate the same range of transfer capabilities as local system. XCOM allows data centers in various locations worldwide to interact with each other for a wide range of purposes, including:

   * Exchanging files
   * Automating data and report distribution
   * Providing unattended back-up to dissimilar computers
   * Controlling and auditing network activities
   * Maintaining network security
   * Communicating with Point- Of -Sale [POS] terminals

Current Application

XCOM lost popularity in the 1990's to FTP due to licensing costs, but still remains popular industries dominated by mainframes such as banking, insurance and telecommunications.
