This is a list of backup software (software that performs data backups) and providers of managed backup services.

Free Software

Programs listed here have a Free Software compatible or Open Source license. Freeware is proprietary.

  • duplicity GPL - Makes remote encrypted backups using rsync and gnupg.
  • dump - The classic UNIX filesystem dumper.
  • tar - The classic UNIX file aggregator. Work with gzip in a pipe to create tar, tar.gz (tgz) archives.
  • cpio - Unix/Linux archiver.
  • DAR GPL - Disk Archiver. Supports multi-volume compressed archives. Dump, Tar, cpio, afio and DAR support piping and can be used over a network.
  • rsync GPL - tool for maintaining mirrors.

Managed backup service providers

Managed backup services are offered by the following companies and individuals. It is important to think about whether managing backups is better handled internally or by an external person or organization. There are advantages and disadvantages with both options. Firms providing software to managed backup service providers (to help them offer managed backup services) are not listed below. Such software will be listed under the Free and Proprietary lists above.
