Image for Windows is a disk imaging backup software program for Microsoft Windows developed by TeraByte Unlimited, and first released in 2002. Image for Windows supports Windows NT 4.0 through Windows Server 2008 and supports both x32 and x64 versions of Windows. Image for DOS and Image for Linux, which run under DOS and Linux respectively, are also offered by TeraByte Unlimited.
Image for Windows is alternatively known as IFW.
Disk Imaging
Image for Windows supports data compression, full and differential backup disk images, command line switches for use within batch files, and a plugin for BartPE.
Data Integrity
Image for Windows includes a special driver that effectively locks image backups to the point in time at which the backup operation began. This technology, compatible with Windows NT 4.0 and later, allows Image for Windows to safely backup the Windows volume while Windows is running.
Image for Windows supports complete byte-for-byte validations of data being backed up or restored.
Data Security
Image for Windows allows image backups to be secured with 256-bit AES encryption, with a maximum password length of 128 characters. Passwords are case sensitive and may contain upper-case letters, lower-case letters, numbers, special characters, spaces, and non-ASCII characters.
System Recovery
Image for Windows can restore backups over existing partitions or unpartitioned areas of the hard drive. Because the partition where Windows is installed cannot be restored while (that same copy of) Windows is running, any of the follow solutions can be used:
1. Running Image for DOS from a floppy disk, flash drive, or CD/DVD disc.
2. Running Image for Linux from a flash drive, CD/DVD disc or hard drive.
3. Running Image for Windows from a BartPE CD/DVD disc.
