Mechagodzilla - does it really fall under the scope of Computing?

On the Talk page for Mechagodzilla is states that "This article is within the scope of Computing WikiProject". Is that an error? I was going to add something to the Talk page about the article needing serious attention (5 spelling errors in one section, which I corrected, grammar which I didn't, other standards) but I see no way to edit the talk page. Are there no individual Talk pages now for articles added to a project? Thank you. Mvandemar 02:31, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, it's an error... someone rather dumbly programmed a bot to tag far too many articles as being part of this WikiProject, and is apparently unwilling to discuss or revert their changes. -/- Warren 15:27, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

opinions sought for small company

There is a very slow edit war going on at Segger Microcontroller Systems. The article was deleted once, but reappeared within a month. An anonymous editor removed the {{COI}} and {{Notability}} tags. Instant Messaging Task Force

I would be interested in setting up an Instant Messaging task force within your Wikiproject. I thought I would seek consensus before doing so, as the topic isn't quite big enough for a full-blown Wikiproject, I think. I can work out a banner, (unless you'd like to use a parameter of your existing banner), and I could set up pages and all that. Reply here if you think it's a good idea. Mega Drive Technical Specifications

I've been working on the Sega Mega Drive article and eventually, I would like to push it up to FA standard but I'm lacking and particular background technical knowledge so it's very hard for me to complete the technical specifications section. I am making a request to anyone who has the knowledge or ability to complete or make any addition to the "Technical Specifications" section of the Mega Drive article to please do so.

Notes about the "Technical Specifications" section:

  • The boxes on the left eventually need to go and be replaced with full written sections. Similar to the SNES article.
  • The infoboxes on the right need to be filled in fully

Minesweeper

Can someone please take a look at Minesweeper (computer game), and add a comment under the talk page. I have done some cleanup, but I need some advice/tips on how to make it better. Paxinum 18:49, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

I took a quick look and noticed a couple of problems.

  • There's a lack of sources.
  • The "Shared Mine Analysis" section uses "you", change that.

New Infobox

I didn't know where on the project page to place this, so I though I would mention it here. I have created a new infobox at {{Infobox Computer}}. It doesn't have very many fields, because I am not sure what people would want, but I look forward to seeing it developed. Also, it is currently only implemented at iMac, so it needs editors to add it to the pages of their favorite computer.

Infobox work

There are actually two infoboxen for this project: template:infobox Computer (which is used by Mac articles) and template:infobox computer (used by everything else). I've merged the two using the best bits of both at template:infobox computer, and I'm going to start shuffling everything over there. 9/9/99

I was working in an Investment Bank and we had a load of problems on 9th Sept 1999. Restructure project page

After years of updates, I would suggest to restructure this project page.

First of all, keep this project page as an index to articles only. This mean paragraph on things such as pseudocode should be moved into separate page.

Secondly, reorganize links to articles. For example:

Blogging Project

The Blogging Project has been tagged as inactive since September 2007. It was listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Council/Inactive_projects#Wikipedia with a suggested merge into the Websites project. Unfortunately, the Website project also appears to be inactive. The Blogging project has now been MfDed for demotion to a task force under Websites, but with Websites inactive, would the computing project is willing to step in and absorb them both as a single task force? Articles ideas

The personal computer article is overburdened with too much ancient history of older personal computers and needs to be kept modern. That is why I put the landmark machines into the History of computing hardware (1960s–present) via this diff. I would propose an History of personal computers article if the History of computing hardware (1960s–present) is inviable but at least the History of computing hardware (1960s–present) should be greatly expanded to detail all the most important hardware coming out in this time period. As of right now it doesn't even mention CD-ROM, Key Drives, SD Cards, 802.11b and coffee shop hubs, etc. All major changes in computer hardware and usages. If the number of landmark items get overwhelming then I propose we break the history articles down by decades. Electronic portfolio

The trail of a spamvertiser led me to Electronic portfolio. I deleted the latest, uh, contribution to this, but as for the remainder I hardly know where to start. "Electronic portfolio" is described so vaguely that it might cover just about anything, and followed by a great list of links to services. I clicked on one at random -- no, that's not true, not at random, as it's called "chalk and wire", an agreeably unpretentious name. I thereupon landed at a site that features praise that reads The Chalk and Wire ePortfolio product is the best we have seen in terms of being able to actually perform the claims of the company...Chalk and Wire understands assessment, so they ask the right questions in order to ascertain the heart of what we desire in terms of our research design…We were able to take the Chalk and Wire infrastructure and existing architecture and implement a university-wide ePortfolio system that provides timely feedback to students, and that will aggregate and disaggregate great amounts of assessment data in meaningful ways… To which my response is "WTF is that supposed to mean?" Maybe corporatese has a particularly strong soporific effect on me; could somebody who doesn't fall asleep as quickly as I do take a look at this article? I suspect that a lot of the links are merely to unremarkable commercial sites (however misty and grand their rhetoric), and should be cut pronto. -- Hoary (talk) 11:43, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Software distribution (*ware) articles

I suspect a lot of these articles could be reorganized, including merges and renames. It's really messy. There's currently some (fragmented) discussions on some of the pages about merging one or the other or cross-copying and what not. I think they could really use the guidance of an experienced editor. The MSDN topic in Wiki is innacurate.

WikiProject Computing: Articles of unclear notability

Request for advice: History of IBM mainframe operating systems

Kubanczyk and I both thought the collection of articles about IBM mainframe operating systems was poorly structured, contained a lot of duplication, etc., so we set out to rationalise them. The root article is History of IBM mainframe operating systems. The discussions are mainly at Talk:History of IBM mainframe operating systems and User talk:Kubanczyk.

We've been stalled for a while because User talk:Kubanczyk and I disagree over whether to merge into OS/360 and successors all the content on MVS and its descendants, execpt to z/OS, the current member of that lineage. There is discussion of the issue at Talk:OS/360 and successors as well as at the Talk pages I already mentioned.

It would be helpful if someone could check out the articles and offer some suggestions on this issue. Philcha (talk) 09:05, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

WikiProject Malware

Even though how much important a subject is, when its out contributors, it won't work out for the learners. That's my point.I think WikiProject Malware is an important one since it aims to improve articles about malwares. Malwares will always be a part of computing or computer science, when people got their computers infected, and turn for Wikipedia for answers about the malware that deserted them and stumble only on stubs or start class articles, what would they think about it? Please lets revive this WikiPrject because I've seen a lot of Malware articles in here and most are, either stubs or starter class articles. If this WikiProject is revived, this will be a great help on improving such articles and will also be a great help for readers alike. All we need now are some participants to work this project out. Please help.

Keyboards

Keyboard is a disamb page, which lists among others Alphanumeric keyboard and Keyboard (computing), along with IBM PC keyboard and Apple Keyboard.
It seems to me that the first two of these should definitely be merged, and I question whether it's logical to list keyboards of individual manufacturers on the disamb page. -- Writtenonsand (talk) 23:56, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

Paging vs. Swapping

It is possible to use paging without swapping. This is done in embedded systems. In this case, only code and constants are paged, while data pages cannot be "swapped out".

Since paging is possible without swapping, why does the Wikipedia insist that the terms are almost interchangeable?

Database

Do databases fall within the portfolio of this WikiProject? If so, why do they seem to be omitted from the list? If not, why not? Does some other group handle DB, DBMS, etc.? If so, who are they?

Database itself is a large topic, and 90% of all advanced database systems are not simply just built on DBMS, ODBC-JDCBC and RDBMS, that is just a VERY small part of database. The architecture involve a great deals of workstation multi-core architecture with wise interconnect selection, technologies supported in the types of storage (e.g. Holograms, Hard Drive or SSD), function of each chip (some companies expect the chip to be so detailed that you have to be able to program the SoC [System on Chip]), ability of XML compatibility and ability of database replacement (such as replacing the SQL for Microsoft access along with Window Media Player .asx playlist file (object) for faster streaming media via FTP to provide better security, due to DRM [Digital Right Management] implementation), ability of virtualize interface management for GoS and QoS, database network mapping and trafficking ...etc and so forth. --Ramu50 (talk) 02:22, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Product Support Services

Hi, I am doing a class project in which I am in charge of writing a paper and presentation on Support. We are creating a fictional project and going through all the following processes: Marketing, Architecture & Design, Development, Testing, and Support. I have been googleing various ways in which product and/or services are supported. Unfortunately when I came to wikipedia all I found was an short article about Microsoft's Product Support division. It would be nice for someone to expand on this and include all the other companies that specialize in being the outsourced product support center as well as the various ways in which products are supported (i.e: JAVA chat applets, call centers, FAQ wizards, online support tickets). grammatical

Does the first paragraph of this topic really need a comment on how to use the word grammatically? Suggestion: Let's reserve the first paragraph (at least) for the main point and move (much) further down the fact that FLOPS is plural and singular.
