The Johns Hopkins University operates the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), on a 360-acre site in Laurel, Maryland. APL specializes in research for the U.S. Department of Defense, NASA and other Government agencies. It was founded in 1942, to improve the effectiveness of Allied anti-aircraft shells in World War II.

APL currently has a staff of more than 3,000 people and more than 100 ongoing programs. Annual spending is more than $600 million.
