"Briefly known as"

I get the impression the "briefly known as" thing is supposed to be a humourous reference to "the artist formerly known as Prince", but unfortunately "briefly" can mean either "for a short time" or "in short", so use of "briefly" is ambiguous and not appropriate for the introductory paragraph. If someone knows which is really meant, please rephrase and if you think the cutesy joke part needs to be retained, move it further down and also explain it.
