Pluggable Authentication Modules (PAM) provide dynamic authorization for applications and services in a Linux system. The service is configured in the /etc/pam.conf file or by individual files in the /etc/pam.d/ directory.

There are four groups for independent management:

  • account
  • authentication
  • password
  • session
