These libraries represent the majority of genes expressed in a given tissue, at a given time, and in response to a given treatment. EST stands for ‘expressed sequence tag’, and libraries made from these sequences typically represent short (100-700 bases) fragments of genes that are expressed. Each library is like a ‘snapshot’ of the genes expressed as a function of the plant or animal material used to isolate the original RNA, the time (developmental or kinetic) at which the tissue was taken and whatever treatment was given to the organism or tissue at the time of collection.
