Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry is a peer-reviewed academic journal that covers biotechnology, with a focus on diagnostics, therapeutics and human healthcare. The journal is currently published monthly online by Portland Press Ltd, London, a wholly owned publishing subsidiary of the Biochemical Society, on behalf of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUPAC), from editorial offices in London, UK, and La Jolla, USA.
History
Previously called the Journal of Applied Biochemistry (1979-1985), the journal was originally published by Academic Press and assumed its present-day title in 1986. In 1993 its publication was taken over by Portland Press Ltd, and at that time its Editor-in-Chief was the late Peter Campbell of University College London. During the period 1996-2002 its Editor-in-Chief was Roger Lundblad (formerly of Baxter Biotech, Duarte, USA). Its current Editor-in-Chief is Parviz Shamlou (Eli Lilly and Co., Indianapolis, USA). Originally publishing papers of a general applied-biochemistry nature, the journal has in latter years refocused its scope to cover diagnostics, therapeutics and human healthcare.
Modern journal
Biotechnology and applied Biochemistry is published monthly online, and as nine print issues per year in three volumes. Content from 1998 is available online in PDF and HTML formats, with papers from 2005 also being available in an enhanced full-text format (EESI-View). The journal has introduced Opt2Pay, a facility whereby authors can pre-pay to make their article freely available online. The journal’s 2006 impact factor was 1.903, and it was ranked 73 out of 140 journals in the ISI Biotechnology and Applied Microbiology category. Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry is indexed by Dechema, BIOSIS, CAB International, Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, Elsevier BIOBASE/CABS, Elsevier EMBASE, Excerpta Medica, MEDLINE, International Food Information Service, IFIS Publishing and ISI (Institute for Scientific Information). The journal’s current Editor-in-Chief is Parviz Shamlou (Indianapolis, USA).
