LAS is a standard File format used Commonly in the Oil and Gas Industry to store Log Curve Information. Well logging is used to create a more accurate Understanding of the Stratigraphy of an area.

A single Las file can only contain data about one Oil well. But it can contain any number of Curves for that well.

Common curves you would find in a LAS file would be Gamma ray logging, Sonic logging, or Resistivity logging.

One of the restrictions of the LAS format is that data must be saved in the same interval. This usually isn't an issue with most Log Curves, but One could imagine this is why Checkshot Survey's are stored in a separate file.

Information about the standard can be found below http://www.cwls.org/las_info.php http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2007/1142/
