On August 18 2005, Java Island, the main island of Indonesia which the capital Jakarta is on, suffered a massive power outage at around 10:23 (UTC+7).

The state-owned electricity company confirmed that the electricity grid had failed at several points throughout Java and the neighbouring island of Bali, causing a supply shortfall of 2700MWh, roughly half of the original supply. Consequently, power went out in most areas of Java, including all parts of the capital Jakarta.

Almost 100 million people were affected by the outage, making this by far the most serious blackout (by the number of people affected) to date.

Power resumed in most areas of Jakarta at about 17:00 ([UTC]+7).
