Design Exchange Format (DEF) is an open specification for representing physical layout of a chip. It represents the netlist and circuit layout. DEF is used in conjunction with LEF to represent complete physical layout of a chip while it is being designed.

Latest version of DEF is 5.6. DEF was developed by Cadence Design Systems.
