David Austin Sayre (March 12, 1793 - September, 1870) was a prominent silversmith, banker and educator. Born in Madison, New Jersey, Sayre move to Lexington in 1811. He is best remembered as founder of Transylvania Female Institute, renamed Sayre Female Institute in 1855; and again renamed to Sayre School in 1942. Sayre is buried in Lexington Cemetery.
