In Computer Science, data is often distinguished from code, though both are represented in modern computers as binary strings.

In most modern operating system designs, programs are sectioned into different segments, one of which is called the data segment. The latter is composed of values that are able to be modified at runtime, but whose storage space cannot grow during runtime and which was allocated at compile time.
