Free and open-source graphics device driver
Appearance
This article is about the use of NVIDIA graphics cards with Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). This has been the subject of much confusion and controversy within the FOSS community for many years.
Introduction
NVIDIA provides binary-only 3D support for its cards, but does not provide sufficient technical documentation to enable independent developers to create free/open support. This goes against dominant FOSS culture, which regards the availability of source code as a prerequisite for quality and security.
Support without full 3D acceleration is available in the XFree86 and X.Org drivers, and these are sufficient for most applications other than graphics-intensive games.
