Compensator tries to eliminate recoil effect in guns by redirecting the venting gasses. Recoil effect causes the gun to pull and sidewards during firing, which might pull the muzzle to wrong direction before the bullet leaves the barrell.

Generic design pushes the venting gases upward, causing the gun to drop, equal amount of the recoil pull effect, cancelling each other out.
