The term Musical form has two main meanings.

To resolve the ambiguity, in this article we shall speak about musical form of composition, while musical genres are discussed elsewhere. Sometimes it is difficult to draw distinction between musical genre and form of composition, since often one dictates another, and both share the name.

Other structural characteristic of a musical work are its Melody, Harmony, Texture, Style.

Forms of composition may be defined basing on the formal structure of the work, on its purpose, or on the set and types of musical instruments and vocal involved.
