Varicode is a huffman code for use in PSK31. It supports all ASCII characters, but the characters used most frequently have shorter codes. The space between characters is indicated by a 00 sequence. Originally created for speeding up real-time keyboard-to-keyboard exchanges over low bandwidth links, it is a very useful format to shrink text files. Varicode is freely available.
For all practical purposes, Vericode is not the best code for the transmission of radioteletype.
It must be said that 24 bit turbo codes are spectrally superior to Vericode -- for the simple reason that Vericode uses 32 bits and Turbo Code only use 24 bits. The difference in the codes is (Vericode - Turbo Code) = 8 bits or 25%.
Note that Turbo Codes can pervay 7 bit and 8 bit bytes fairly free of error, not 6 bit bytes. Vericode does not truly send 8 bit ASCII bytes.
Turbo Codes have not been utilized to date for the transmission of radioteletype on shortwave.
Vericode is a somewhat weak compressor for compressing text in languages other than English.
