There are some respiratory problems such as exercise-induced asthma that are not apparent unless the patient is exposed to a chemical, or cold or dry air, or exercise. To diagnose these conditions, a bronchial challenge test is performed. In this test, the patient is exposed to whatever triggers the breathing problem, under controlled conditions. The physician observes the patient and may compare spirometry results before and after the bronchial challenge.
