The Untitled X-Files Sequel is a projected film adaptation of the television series The X-Files, about FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully and their investigations into the paranormal. The movie would be the second movie based on the series, after the original 1998 film adaptation, The X-Files: Fight the Future.[1] The film's production status is uncertain (there is no production green light, and there may not be an agreed-upon budget) and the final title is unknown.
The sequel has been in development hell since the release of the original film in 1998. Its production status is still uncertain, with no greenlight or agreed-upon budget. However, David Duchovny has said that the script is complete and the intention is to begin production of the film in December 2007, with an eye to a release in Summer 2008. The film, if made, is to be written by veteran X-Files writer Frank Spotnitz and series creator Chris Carter, who will also direct. Both Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are committed to star.
Unlike the first film, the plot will not focus upon the series' mythology, but will instead be a supernatural thriller or horror, acting as a standalone X-Files story in the vein of the "monster of the week" episodes.
In 2005, Duchovny had stated that both he and Gillian Anderson were ready to return to their roles, and that the film would begin production that year. However, a December 2005 lawsuit, filed by Chris Carter against 20th Century Fox effectively postponed plans. In August 2006, Duchovny confirmed that a sequel would be made, stating that "we're all signed on" and expressing the hope that it would be the start of an X-Files film series comparable to the Mission Impossible franchise. In March 2007, Duchovny said that final negotiations for the sequel were being wrapped and filming would probably start in 2008, and in April 2007, Gillian Anderson indicated in an interview that the lawsuit had been settled, and that production on the sequel was now set to move forward, saying "Every year or two they talk about it again, but it seems like it might be for real this time."
