Simple username changes

This page hosts simple requests for a username change across the Wikimedia network. Requests are processed by stewards and global renamers.

Instructions
  1. Read Wikipedia:Changing username carefully. You must be aware of and understand all the implications of changing your username. Specifically:
    • Your name will be changed to the new one in the page history of every page you've edited, and in all log entries.
    • Your user pages, account preferences, and edits will be moved to the new name. Please do not create a new account or attempt to move them yourself.
    • Links left by your previous signatures will still point to the old userpage; however, a redirect will be created pointing to your new userpage.
    • Understand that using your real name as your username may put you at risk of harassment.
  2. Read the username policy and ensure your new name does not violate it. Usernames must not:
  3. Check that your new username is not already in use by searching for it on Special:CentralAuth. If the name is registered, even on another Wikimedia project, it is taken.
If the target name hasn't made any edits to any Wikimedia project, you may request usurpation at meta:Steward requests/Username changes.
  4. Log in with your current username. Requests will not be approved if the requester is not logged in.
  5. Place your request here.
    • Add your desired username after NEW=.
    • Add a reason for the change after REASON=. Requests without a valid reason will not be approved.
    • Do not change anything else.
  6. Select Publish changes.
  7. Check back on this page periodically to answer any inquiries regarding your request. Consider watching the page so you can monitor updates. Requests may be closed if there are unresolved queries.

Requests that do not follow these instructions or that are grossly malformed are subject to removal.

For stewards, global renamers, and clerks

Only stewards and global renamers have the authority to approve or decline requests. Requests are automatically clerked by a bot, but occasionally human intervention is required, particularly for malformed requests. If you would like to help out with clerking, please see Wikipedia:Changing username/Assistance.

 Not done Username policv states:
Users with non-Latin usernames are welcome to edit in Wikipedia. However, scripts of non-Latin languages (such as Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Japanese and others) are illegible to most other contributors of the English Wikipedia. As a courtesy to the rest of the contributors, users with such usernames are encouraged to help them navigate by means of Latin signatures, Latin user redirects, and an explanation on their userpage.
This is English language Wikipedia, and non-Latin usernames are unreadable, unwritable and unpronounceable to most participants here. I respectfully suggest you register your Hebrew username separately and redirect to your Latin character username or vice-versa, and include the Latin character transceiption in your sig. -- Cecropia 19:09, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Clerk note: - Unfortunately, users aren't allowed to have non-latin names per the username policy. Please choose another. Rudget Editor Review 12:03, 13 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No, actually, that explicitly isn't prohibeted, because of the expected move to unified login. SamBC(talk) 16:14, 13 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That quoted passage actually says to use latin signatures and userpage redirects - it emphatically does not prohibit the usernames themselves. Users are allowed to create accounts with nonlatin usernames, and such are pretty universally rejected (ie, not blocked) at WP:UAA. It seems strange to be stricter about username changes than we are about newly-created names. SamBC(talk) 19:44, 13 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I really do hope this is reconsidered as you are hereby denying a username change that is clearly within policy. This maybe the english wikipedia, but we have the username policy for a reason, even the crats should follow that. Ryan Postlethwaite 19:48, 13 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I believe the single letter cabal had an user whose user name was just one chinese character. Where can I find more information about the unified login? A.Z. 02:23, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The editor is free to create an account with his Hebrew username, which he can then redirect to his latin-character username, or vice versa, as I already suggested. But know that it is disrespectful to the community to use a name that is meaningless to most. Other editors are entitled to know who they are dealing with, and a spate of non-Latin usernames simply creates a new class of anon, as it is difficult for others to separate any one such user from another. Though he can create a non-Latin username himself, I don't feel that I ought to facilitate this by a rename. If another bureaucrat (hopefully, an active one) does the change, so be it, but I think it is the wrong thing to do. -- Cecropia 14:13, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Overload-Ink → Blast Vortex

  • Current name: Overload-Ink (talk · contribs · logs · block log)
  • Requested name: Blast Vortex (rename user)
  • Reason: My original name was the basis for some homebrew games I am trying to develop. However, due to some circumstances outside of my control, I was forced to change this naming concept to something else - "Blast Vortex". I am also trying to consolidate my various nicknames into one or two monikers that I can keep better track of. "Blast Vortex" is the primary name for my personal website. If for whatever reason this name is already taken, I could also take a no-caps/no-spaces version of the same handle ("blastvortex"). Thanks in advance for your patience. Joestella → Single16+Sections

  • Current name: Joestella (talk · contribs · logs · block log)
  • Requested name: Single16+Sections (rename user)
  • Reason: Renaming has already taken place as part of the right to vanish, however a number of true and false accusations of sockpuppetry retain reference to the old username, and on one occasion the old userpage was recreated, apparently maliciously, by an admin known to the user in real life. Request changing the sockpuppet accusation/findings pages to reflect change to username, and protecting them so they can't be changed back. (And if that isn't the business of this page, pointers on where to request this would be appreciated.) 125.255.9.231 18:31, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Comment. As you don't actually want any accounts renamed, you would probably do better to raise this at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents. WjBscribe 20:58, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
