Particle detectors are the most important tool of high energy physics experimental research. To detect all the many types of different particles at a wide range of different energies, to distinguish them and also measure their energy and path (momentum), many different devices have been invented.

Many of them are also important in other areas, most importantly of course any surveillance technologies for radiation safety.
