Code Pie is a Montreal indie rock band, founded in 2002 by singer and guitarist Enzo Palermo. Other band members are Sal Ciolfi (guitars), Michel Semienchuk (bass), Vince Varano (drums), Eva Boodman (trumpet) and Rebecca Lessard (cello). The band has not signed with a major label, but has self-produced its first two albums under its own label, Flagless Records.

History

Formation (2002 - 2005)

Enzo Palermo contacted guitar player Salvatore Ciolfi through an Internet ad in 2002, and the two began writing songs together in the winter of that year. Focused initially on electronic minimalism, as well as the post-rock sound that was at the time synonymous with Montreal, the duo enlisted Senzafine drummer Vince Varano and later bass player Michel Semienchuk (who Ciolfi met at a book reading). The fledgling band was soon named Code Pie—a term used by computer and web programmers. Trumpet player Eva Boodman and cellist Rebecca Lessard soon followed, and the minimalism that had interested the group early on turned pop/rock.

This Habit period (2005 - 2007)

This Habit was released on April 8th, 2005. The album was self-produced and recorded for $700. All songs on This Habit were captured with rented microphones and a portable recording machine manned by Nick Sifoni and Vince Varano. Tracks were recorded in the auditorium of Varano’s former high school, as well as other locations around Montreal. Vocal and overdub work continued in the months that followed the recording while the band worked to get a satisfactory sound their shoestring budget. CD’s cover design was completed by Parlermo’s design studio. The package includes a paper “placemat” with recording details and liner notes.

The Most Trusted Name in Yous (2007)

Recorded over a period of over a year, The Most Trusted Name in Yous is Code Pie’s second album. Like the band’s initial release, the record was entirely self-produced and financed, but unlike This Habit, the sophomore effort was recorded at the Hotel2Tango studio. The album took over a year to complete as it was recorded in 4-6 hour blocks to accommodate the band’s hectic schedule. Many guest musicians—most of whom are friends of the band—are featured on the album. The Most Trusted Name in Yous was released on June 16th, 2007.
