2007 Shanghai Masters
The 2007 Shanghai Masters was the inaugural event of the Shanghai Masters tournament and the first ranking event of the season. It took place between the 6th and the 12th of August 2007 at the Shanghai Grand Stage and contested the top 16 snooker players in the world along with another 16 qualifiers. It was won by Dominic Dale who defeated Ryan Day 10-6 in the final.
Notable happenings
- Ronnie O'Sullivan withdrew from the event due to back problems that prevented him from travelling or playing.[1]
- With all the expectation Ding Junhui losing out in the 2nd round to 2nd seed Graeme Dott. During the match He is on 73 on the way to a maximum when he misses an easy black, then deliberatly hits the white with his cue in frustration. Doing this left enough points for Dott to win the frame and match as he gained 7 points for the foul, but he missed an easy red and left it over the pocket.
- Matthew Stevens going 4 - 0 down to Stephen Maguire, but taking the next 5 frames to win 5 - 4.
- Dominic Dale dying his hair Blonde half way through the tournament because he saw the style in a barbershop in Shanghai.
- Dominic Dale won 8 consecutive frames in the final, claiming victory from trailing 2-6.

Qualifying
Qualifying for the Shanghai Masters took place at Pontin's Prestatyn, Wales from 26 to 29 June 2007.[2]
Wildcard round
A wildcard round was held on the opening day of the tournament before the first round proper to allow eight Chinese players to display their abilities. Matches in this round were best of 9 frames.[3]

Prize money and ranking points
The distribution of prize money and ranking points for the tournament is detailed below. Players who lost their first match were awarded seeded loser points, shown in parentheses next to the standard number of points awarded to players at each stage. In addition to the £20,000 cash prize available for making a maximum break in the main stages of the event, a car was also offered by title sponsors Roewe,[5] although neither prize was won.

Century breaks
Dominic Dale scored the highest break of the tournament, a total clearance of 143, in the tenth frame of the final, beating Ian McCulloch's first round effort of 133. The highest break in the pre-televised stage of the competition was 140, made by Dave Harold in the fourth qualifying round.
A total of 32 centuries were made during qualifying; in the main tournament, 17 century breaks were made by eight different players:[4]
