Polar 8 was a proposed 180-metre-long, 100,000-horsepower heavy icebreaker intended for the Canadian Coast Guard to assert Canadian Arctic sovereignty [1]. It was proposed to Parliament in 1985 by the then-Conservative government after the unauthorized transit of a U.S. icebreaker through the Northwest Passage, which Canada claims ownership of. However, budget constraints caused this ship to be canceled before it was even built.
