Path Computation Element (PCE)

The Path Computation Element is a network component designed for the computation of paths for MPLS and GMPLS Traffic Engineering Label Switched Paths. It is standardized by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) since 2005. It is related to a modern vision of networks where route computations should more or less be separated from actual packet forwarding.
