instructables is a website created by Eric Wilhelm, Ph.D. It is dedicated to step-by-step collaboration among members who interact through an "add comment" section below each instructable step as well in topic forums. Members submit instructables continuously in hopes of earning praise from other members. Some comments, however, can be demeaning and rude as well as undeserved, in addition comments that offer praise. Derogatory comments which may effect the intent and spirit of the instructable can be deleted by a moderator. Derogatory comments can not be removed by the instructable contributor but can be flagged. Any intentional or perceived violation of the instructables Terms of Service may result in partially or fully blocked access without any notice, preventing the user from deleting, removing or viewing his copyrighted files. DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) take down notices are often ignored, requiring litigation for resolution.

The original content focused mostly on doing things like building electronic or mechanical devices to solve common problems around the home. Content since then has expanded to a larger array of categories, including arts and crafts, food, home, life, "not liable," transportation and tech. The site allows uploading of photos, diagrams, video and animation to explain even complex terminology and mechanisms in lucid terms.

History

Dr. Wilhelm earned his BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees at MIT, where he developed methods to print electronics and micro-electromechanical systems using nanoparticles. Eric co-founded Squid Labs in order to have impact through early-stage innovation. Instructables started as an internal Squid Labs project, which Eric has since spun out as an independent company he runs with a passion. He loves building kite-powered contraptions, cooking breakfast, and demystifying technology so that even his Grandmother can use it.

Instructables is known for its LED Throwies, crazy K'Nex guns, and thousands of DIY ideas added very often!
