The Defence Institute of Advanced Technology as it is known today (previously Institute of Armament Technology), came into being as the Institute of Armament Studies in 1952. In 1967, the Institute moved to its present location at Girinagar, Pune (approximately 22 kms west to Pune, situated on bans of very famous Khadakwasla lake). On the basis of accreditation by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). In the year 2000, the Institute acquired the status of a Deemed University. Institute runs eight post graduate courses in Modeling and Simulation, Laser and Electro-optics, Chemical Technology, (High Energy Materials), Aerospace Engineering, Air Armament Engineering, Combat Vehicles, amd many more short courses. Few of the courses are open for civillian students also.
