A Linux tablet is a tablet PC running a version of Linux as its operating system; currently most tablet PCs run on Microsoft's Windows XP Tablet PC Edition or Windows Vista operating systems. While the majority of tablet PC hardware is the same as or similar to that of a standard IBM PC compatible computer, the lack of a keyboard and mouse introduces unique design challenges. Because of this any person trying to design a version of Linux just for the tablet PC must provide a GUI to enable the user to use the stylus and the screen digitizer so they can provide the input needed to manage the Installation process.
One early implementation of a Linux tablet was the ProGear by FrontPath. The ProGear used a Transmeta chip and a resistive digitizer. The ProGear initially came with a version of Slackware Linux, but could later be bought with Windows 98. Because these computers are general purpose IBM PC compatible machines, they can run many different operating systems.
Some Linux tablets are actually convertible laptops. Doing this requires that the Xorg configuration be capable of rotation.
